About Duckie's Handcrafted
Duckie’s Handcrafted is a home-based business which originally launched in Burlington, NJ on January 31, 2011. As of August 2013, I have moved to Marlton, NJ.
I started with creating soy candles and have since expanded my crafts. I now offer hand-dipped incense sticks, jewelry items such as earrings and pendants. And for my small furry friends, I also offer sewn catnip cat toys.
About my candles:
Each one of my soy candles are hand crafted in my kitchen. From washing the jars prior to creation, mixing the melted soy wax while adding in fragrance oils and then pouring each candle, every aspect is handled with my own two hands. Each one is individually handmade with plenty of attention to detail, a lot of love and pride!
Due to each candle being homemade and unique, burning time will vary slightly. However, I have tested candles randomly and have gotten approximately 20 hours out of my 2.75oz candles, 55 hours out of my 8oz candles and 85 hours out of my 12oz candles.
Soy candles are no longer 100% natural if dye has been added to the wax, if any unnatural additives are used or if man-made fragrance oils instead of essential oils are used in production of the candles. My candles are not 100% natural as I do indeed add dye to my wax and I use fragrance oils. I do not use any unnatural additives in the production of my candles – I use organic coconut oil to help the wax adhere to the jars better and to aid in controlling the appearance of frosting. Frosting is a natural occurrence with soy wax and becomes more noticeable when dye is used in production. It will not affect the burning process or the fragrance of the candle; however, it is not attractive to a majority of customers so I try to my best to keep the frosting to a minimal.
So, why did I choose to work with soy?
And why did I choose the name “Duckie”?
Trust me, I have been asked this question a few times! Warning: it’s time for me to sound a bit geeky...
I used to play a computer game a few years ago with a group of friends. I always went by the nickname Duckie on it. The nickname has simply stuck with me and I cherish it. I’d also like to believe that it is a pretty fitting name for my business along with it aiding in the creation of my logo.

So, why did I choose to work with soy?
- Candles made with soy are clean burning with measurably less soot than other waxes and when burned correctly they are virtually soot-free.
- Candles made with soy tend to burn slower and cooler creating a longer burning candle.
- The wax is easier to remove from materials and other surfaces and will clean up with soap and warm water.
